Starting your own business is, quite frankly, a life-changing event. It’s a wild mix of adrenaline-fuelled highs, "what have I done?" lows, late-night stresses and those tiny celebrations when that first invoice gets paid.
When you start a business, it’s tempting to jump straight into the fun stuff - the logos, the LinkedIn posts and the "I’m open for business!" announcement.
But as any founder will tell you, the"Boring-But-Vitals" aren't glamorous, but getting them right now means you won’t be waking up in a cold sweat come self assessment time.
Is your business name officially yours? Checking Companies House (if you're going Limited) or ensuring no one else is trading under that name in your sector is step one. Registering your company name isn't just a legal checkbox; it’s a psychological one. It makes the dream "official."
Even if you aren't ready for a full website today, buy your domain name (ie: yourbusiness.co.uk) now. Squarespace is a good website to use. It costs about the same as a couple of coffees, but it does two vital things:
It stops the squatters: It prevents anyone else from grabbing your brand name online.
The Email Factor: It allows you to set up a professional email address. hello@yourbusiness.co.uk carries a lot more weight than a generic Gmail address when you’re pitching for those first big contracts.
Talking about insurance feels a bit like talking about a rainy Tuesday. However, whether you need Professional Indemnity (to protect your advice) or Public Liability (if you’re meeting people in person), having insurance is a hallmark of a professional. It tells your first client, "I take my work, and your protection, seriously."
Self-assessment. It’s the phrase that strikes fear into the hearts of many new founders.
My advice? Start a "Paperwork Trail" on day one.
Keep every receipt: Even that pack of pens or the coffee you bought while networking.
The Separate Bank Account: Try not to mix your food shop with your business expenses. Even a simple second current account makes your record-keeping 10x easier.
You might be wondering: “Why is a marketer telling me about insurance and tax?”
Because confidence is a marketing tool.
When your foundations are shaky, you hesitate.
When these bits are handled, you can stand tall and speak with the authority of a real business owner.
The Honest Truth Setting up a business is a marathon, not a sprint. Getting these basics right today means you can spend your energy on the parts of the business you actually love tomorrow.
